Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Foot Pain

Major foot pain can sometimes indicate the need for surgical intervention. Despite the fact that in some cases it becomes necessary to go down this path, there are non-surgical treatment options that can provide significant relief for many types of foot conditions.

A very common cause for foot pain is over-pronation, which is the tendency of the foot to rotate inward during the normal walking motion. When the extent of inward roll is excessive, it can be the cause of many foot conditions that can turn severe and chronic over time. Over-pronation in most cases can be corrected by providing our feet with appropriate arch support . Orthotic insoles are devices that provide support for the foot arch and help correct over-pronation, thus preventing or relieving common foot ailments such as plantar fasciitis, shin splints, arch pain, heel spurs, among others.

Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in the treatment of certain painful lower leg and foot conditions. The idea behind acupuncture for foot pain is to stimulate the flow of electricity and blood to the affected areas of the feet.

A good foot massage can also relieve many types of foot pain, especially when the cause can be attributed to compressed nerves due to ill-fitting shoes. Massaging the affected area with soft, rhythmic circular motions is also a great way to soothe painful, sore feet. Additionally, soaking in warm Epsom salts is an ideal method to relieve tight muscles and inflammation. In addition, a foot cream with menthol or eucalyptus provides the feet with a refreshing boost.

For people who are afflicted with major foot problems and conditions, the mere act of walking or standing can feel excruciating. Nevertheless, with proper preventive care amd early treatment, the feet can heal appropriately and re-injury avoided.
